To succeed in the highly competitive TV news broadcasting industry, the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) decided to transform its static brochure-type Web site into a new dynamic Web site with accurate up-to-date information and extensive video content. The leading Microsoft Certified Partner and Application Service Provider - Bulgarian Software House (BSH), offered BNT the latest Microsoft content management solution on a monthly subscription basis. BNT completely outsourced the Web site design, hosting, management, and support to BSH. The new 2,500+-page BNT Web site was launched on April 22nd 2002 and became the first Web site of a public national television based on the Microsoft Content Management Server 2001, part of the Microsoft .NET Enterprise Server family.
BNT was found in 1959 and in May 1999 started broadcasting its first satellite channel that covers Europe „TV Bulgaria“. In early 2002, BNT needed to modify its Web presence to reflect its status and reputation, meet viewers demands and expectations, and beat its competitors with recent and accurate information.

Challenges

The new BNT Web site was aimed at becoming a popular place where the worldwide Bulgarian-speaking community could find national, international news, entertainment and TV shows. Consequently, it had to feature a lot of functionality, usability, extensive video content and built-in Bulgarian language features.

The web site needed to be updated frequently with less than an hour lag time to make sure that current news are available online as soon as released.

BNT required a content management solution to streamline the Web publishing process and to ensure that Web content would be edited and checked, approved and published, updated and archived in a well-organized and efficient manner.

BNT employees wanted to be able to publish content on their own without turning to an IT specialist for every single change. Until then, most of the work was done manually and on paper and after approval, content was sent to the IT specialists, who then converted it to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).

BNT corporate users needed a tool that will allow them to publish increasing amounts of content without reducing productivity. So far the IT team was spending over 70 percent of its working hours on refreshing the content and graphics of static Web pages even though only few of the TV shows had Internet presence.

The new zero-effort turnkey solution had to be delivered from concept to launch in less than six weeks and within BNT current budget.
Solution
BSH was the first Bulgarian company that had already purchased and deployed the Microsoft Content Management Server 2001 as Web-based application service. Content Management Server 2001, part of the Microsoft .NET Enterprise Server family, is the enterprise Web content management system that enables quick and efficient building, deployment, and maintenance of dynamic Web sites. The Application Service Provider business model employed by BSH is a unique mix of BSH professional knowledge and the latest Microsoft software, offered for a low-cost monthly subscription fee to multiple customers. After receiving excellent references from BSH customers, BNT decided that BSH was the natural choice for outsourcing the design, development, implementation, training and maintenance of the renovated BNT Web site.
